The Malaysia National History Musuem
by: Janice Kou

Incepted 4 th April 1996, today the National History Museum (Muzium Sejarah Nasional) is a new tourist attraction based on the “edutainment” concept introduced by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism. The exhibits it beholds are of great importance and relevance to Malaysian history. Once a former commercial bank way back in 1910; the National History Museum is currently administered to by the Department of Museum and Antiquities.

The establishment of the National History Museum took nearly five years to achieve. It was planned in the 6th Malaysia Plan Development Program and allocated an estimated cost of RM3.44 million. This museum is an essential addition to Malaysia’s tourism portal; not ignoring the fact that tourism revenue is still one of the major contributors to the country’s revenue today.

The National History Museum carries out continuous research activities by collecting the nation's treasures and recording inception dates and related publications. To date, there are close to 1,000 in collection that the museum has managed to preserve and categorize in priority of importance to the nation’s history. Categories of such heritage items include weaponry, manuscripts, maps, coins, royal seals and many others.

The museum practices its “edutainment” concept by encouraging visitors to discover the wealth of Malaysia's historical heritage through its exhibitions. Among the important exhibits in the museum is the table on which the 1874 Pangkor Treaty was signed on, and the First Federation of Malaya flag that was raised after the Malay states were declared independent from Britain’s stronghold on 31 st August 1957. Showcasing the unique history of Malaysia from its early age until today, visitors are also exposed to the various artifacts and related displays. This enables foreigners to relate to Malaysia’s local cultures and at the same time remind Malaysians of their roots and stimulate their sense of belonging.

Offering other interesting exhibits not to be found anywhere else, the museum holds in its possession a 520 million-year-old metamorphic sandstone, a homo sapien skull believed to be 40,000-years of age, and a rather uncommon octagonal gold coin that was assessed to be from the 15th century.

Bearing Moorish features and Islamic motifs on this three-level structure, The National History Museum sits well amidst other outstanding Mogul buildings at Jalan Raja, Kuala Lumpur. Open from 9am to 6pm daily, admission is free for all visitors.
