Laser Eye Surgery - is it Worth Looking Into
by: Alien Digg!

LASIK is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person's dependency on glasses or contact lenses. The goal of this Web site is to provide objective information to the public about LASIK surgery. If you're near-sighted or far-sighted, you may need glasses in order to see clearly. If you wear contact lenses, there is the daily hassle of putting them in every morning and taking them out every night. Technological advances are making these partial solutions to vision impairment obsolete. One of the most innovative methods of dealing with eye problems today is LASIK Eye Surgery. But what is LASIK and how do you know if you are a good candidate for the surgery?

Short for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, the procedure involves peeling back a small section from the top of the cornea. A focused laser will be used to reshape the cornea and eliminate any tissue that may be the root cause of the eye problem.

What is PRK?

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a surface refractive procedure in which the epithelium (surface layer of the cornea) is removed using the excimer laser, rotary brush or with the aid of 20% alcohol. The excimer laser is then used to re-shape the cornea to produce the desired correction. At the completion a contact lens or an eye patch is applied.

Your physician will also ask you for a medical history, and may also give you specific instructions in preparing for surgery. If you wear contact lenses, you will need to stop wearing them for a specified period of time before your initial consultation or examination. Your doctor will also explain the kind of anesthesia required and the surgical facility used.
Most patients are pleased with the outcome of their surgeries; however, LASIK eye surgery is not guaranteed to restore perfect eyesight. There is a small risk that distortions from the procedure, such as blurred or hazy vision, will be permanent. On rare occasions, results of the surgery are worse than before. While laser eye surgery has received FDA approval, as with any surgical procedure there are clinical risks involved. It is very important for anyone considering laser eye surgery to thoroughly discuss any possible complications with their physician before committing to the procedure.

Another area which must be considered with corrective laser eye surgery is cost.

LASIK Risks and Benefits

Most patients are extremely pleased with their LASIK results. LASIK eye surgery benefits include improved visual activity, freedom from corrective eyewear, and possibly new career opportunities. Patients who achieve a successful LASIK outcome can eliminate their need for glasses or contact lenses, and enjoy the freedom of clear vision at all times.
