SD is always on the lookout for new and hip restaurants in town. We stumbled upon Pampas South American Grill & Bar which is located along Changkat Bukit Bintang (within walking distance from Bintang Walk). With a menu that boasts meat, meat and more meat, who can resist?
- The Vibe
In typical South American fashion, Pampas is filled with earth colours mixed with blood red. The walls are covered with massive paintings of amigos and their horses. It is a casual environment which is suitable for social or family gatherings. The música de fondo (background music) finishes the whole South American package minus the salsa dancers on what is seemingly a non existent the dance floor. There's plenty of room for dancing though if that would tickle your fancy.
- The Food
South Americans are famous for their meat dishes. At Pampas , the menu doesn't stray very far from that. Everything looks and sounds massive but what's a good hearty meal if it's not the size of a cow. It just means that it is more value for money.
To start of your meal, try the Pan Seared Scallop with Black Eye Bean served with Ratatouille. The scallops arrived nicely cooked without being too raw or overcooked which is a mistake that many restaurants make. Accompanied by a bed of vegetables, it is soft and moist. Another tempting starter would be the Monalisa Soft Shell Crab Salad. Crunchy on the outside and smooth on the inside, this dish is deep fried so if you're not a fan of oily food we suggest going with the Scallops instead. Both are pretty light dishes that won't crowd your tummy so there's space for the main.
Somehow, it feels as if mental preparation is necessary for the mains at Pampas but we were up for the challenge. The Oven Baked Barramundi Fish was exquisitely prepared. It arrived as a work of art and left the table completely wiped clean. The fish was smooth and moist which meant it wasn't overcooked. The mix of sweet from the fish and sour from the sauce creates the perfect balance. The best part about this dish is the Lemon Butter Sauce. It is deliciously addictive and after one taste you'd want to dip everything else in it. What is South American if there's no mention of steaks. The Grilled Beef Tenderloin is the house specialty. This massive hunk of meat comes with a whole lot of side dishes and Sicilian sauce. The sauce gives out a slightly sweet taste and has a touch of cinnamon. This steak is best served at medium doneness to keep it juicy and tender. You have the option of replacing the sauces that comes with the original dish but it's wise to just stick to what's recommended.
- The Service
The service at Pampas is top notch. The friendly staff will greet you at the door and stay with you all through your meal (not literally of course). They are obliging and prompt with your requests. No sour faces at Pampas and that definitely gives them bonus points for good service.
SD Food Advisor's take on Pampas If you are walking along Changkat Bukit Bintang, we suggest dropping by at Pampas . Not only will you be able to satiate your taste for meat but at a reasonable price too. The Grilled Beef Tenderloin is priced at RM45 which is relatively cheap considering that Argentinean beef is used. The atmosphere is one that is casual and comfortable which makes it perfect for social or family gatherings. Just remember to wear stretchy pants to avoid breaking a buckle (or a zip or whatever holds your bottoms together).
