Kura: The Epitome of Japanese Cuisine
by: Sophia

Kura is the latest outlet opened by the people who brought us Rakuzen, Zen and Sushi Zanmai. Located within the exquisite One World Hotel, Kura sets a new standard for Japanese Cuisine from its delicious food to its stunning interior.

    o      The Vibe

Kura is the epitome of classy chic. Its interior is a nice blend of contemporary and classic Japanese. The creative combination of wood, glass, steel and other elements are put together in a maze-like setting that is just ingenious. Kura utilizes all of its nooks and crannies, with cosy private booths for 2 (and we really mean cosy and private), large private rooms and a dining area that is linked together by a network of corridors and stairways. It is a tasteful combination that is candy to the eye.

    o      The Food

The menu is literally a very large, heavy and extensive one. It covers appetizers, salads, sushi, sashimi, kaiseki, kaisen kami nabe, dessert and many more. The great thing about the menu at Kura is that it comes with visuals. What you see is what you get.

The Tairyo from the sashimi corner feeds anywhere from 3 to 5 people. Actually, it could possibly just feed one person if you’re not planning to order anything else on the menu. Nine varieties of fresh sashimi are served including cuttlefish, sea urchin, flying fish, amberjack and tuna fatty belly. It is best to ask the staff what is in season as the sashimi that is served may vary.

For those who are looking for a greener meal, the Kaori-Hako Kani no Salada is an excellent choice. It is a crab and flying fish roe salad topped with home made Miso Dressing. This generous portion of fresh, light and healthy greens is complimented by the Miso Dressing which we must say creates added value where taste in concerned.

Fancy some king sized prawns? The Jumbo Ebi Misomayo Yaki is the royalty of all prawns. It is served with soybean paste and mayonnaise. They kid you not when they called it “jumbo” and the fresh prawns are perfectly cooked to bring out the best texture and taste. The soybean paste gives it a creamy finish that is unique and delicious.

The Stamina Roll is another crowd pleaser with avocado and omelette literally rolled up with roasted eel. If you’re into rolls, this will be an excellent choice as it is deliciously refreshing. By the way, did we mention that Kura isn’t stingy when it comes to portions? The rolls are huge and this RM32 dish can probably feed 3 people (that is if you’re planning to share).

An excellent way to end the meal is with the Strawberry Ice. This unique dessert is literally ice cream in strawberry. It is cooling, refreshing and the sweetness of the vanilla compliments the strawberry very well. Curious to know how they stuff ice cream into a strawberry? Order this dessert and find out.

And did we mention that Kura has an excellent selection of Sake and Shochu that is brought in from Japan? Even their ingredients are imported twice weekly to maintain the quality of the food. Amazing!

    o      The Service

A highly trained staff walks the corridors of Kura. Seeing how the layout of the restaurant is as confusing as a maze, every section has a station with a team at your beck and call. Each table has a call button so its easy to grab the staff’s attention. Food is served in a timely manner by the gracious and friendly staff. Basically, there’s nothing more they can do to make your visit a pleasant one.

SD Food Advisor’s take on Kura Japanese Restaurant

Kura is a feast for all the senses. Upon entering, you’ll be stunned by its exquisite interior. Subsequently, you will be stunned by the service. The grand finale is the food and we’re pretty sure you’ll be stunned by that too. A trip to Kura Japanese Restaurant might burn a hole in your pocket temporarily but the experience will be well worth the money.
