Fatty Duck Rice
by: Sophia

Teochew Duck Rice isn’t something that many people have tried. It is hard to find but if you are interested in trying this delicious stewed dish, head on over to SS2 and the uncle who runs Fatty Duck Rice will hook you up. His stall is located at the corner coffeeshop along Jalan SS2/10. Just look for the bright stall with a row of ducks behind its window.

Teochew Duck Rice is stewed duck in brown sauce. It is generally served with rice or porridge, hard boiled duck eggs and cucumbers. The duck is tender and moist because it is stewed and that’s the beauty of stewed duck. The rice itself is also special as it is not sticky and it holds a special fragrance. But the secret recipe is kept a secret by the uncle who prepares it. The best part about Fatty Duck Rice is the brown sauce. Whole ducks are stewed for hours and the thick broth that remains is used as gravy.

There are other dishes available to compliment the duck rice as well. For those who are slightly more adventurous, other parts of the duck are available as well such as the intestines and the gizzards. Other dishes include salted vegetables, mushrooms, bean curd, stewed pork and many more. The stewed pork is absolutely delightful as well. Similarly to the stewed duck, it is moist and tender. Its natural juices are locked in to keep the original flavour within.

A single portion of duck rice will only set you back RM4 to RM5 (depending on whether you request for the egg). One portion is enough to fill you up for the rest of the day. If you’re not alone, you can order the other dishes which are reasonably priced as well. Since it is at a coffee shop, the dress code is very casual you could even wear your pyjamas there. Fatty Duck Rice operates everyday starting at around 4pm to 11pm but they are closed on alternate Wednesdays.
